Compare the actual construction

Compare ABA and MDF shower panels

Two decorative wall panels can look similar while using different substrates. Compare the complete selected products, their installation systems and the same unit of area.

How the two core constructions differ

Neither a decorative photograph nor a trade name is enough to specify a panel.

Compare weight per square metre

Panel width can distort a whole-board comparison.

The reference ABA board is 950 mm wide and 2400 mm high. Its nominal area is 2.28 m², so 6 mm × 850 kg/m³ gives an indicative 5.1 kg/m², or around 11.6 kg per board.

A wider MDF panel covers a different area. Comparing its whole-panel weight with a narrower ABA board combines material and format differences. First compare kg/m²; then compare installed coverage, packaging, breakage and handling.

Actual weights and tolerances should come from the selected production specification. A calculated nominal weight is not a guaranteed packed or shipping weight.

The documented 6 mm reference illustrates the ABA substrate. Its decorative film and surface treatment sit above the sandwich.

Compare equivalent products and test methods

A strong range proposition does not need claims the evidence cannot support.

Wood-free ABA provides a different substrate route from MDF, but it does not justify calling every competing MDF shower system unsuitable for wet rooms. Established MDF-based products use their own facings, protected edges and installation systems.

Do not turn different scratch-test methods into a multiple such as “six times stronger”. Do not assume a thin panel is automatically easier to install in every layout. Evaluate full-size panels, cutting, joint fitting, adhesive compatibility and finished corners together.

For a distributor, the better comparison includes the approved sample, technical documentation, installer guidance, replacement supply and the final cost per installed square metre.
